How is Architecture Training Structured in the UK?

In the UK, becoming a licensed architect typically takes seven to eight years, structured in clearly defined stages.For many international students, especially those coming from different educational systems, the journey often begins with a Foundation in Architecture.
This one-year programme acts as a vital bridge between high school and university-level study. It’s designed to introduce students to architectural thinking, drawing, model-making, and digital design, while also strengthening academic English and study skills. A Foundation Year helps build confidence, creativity, and a solid portfolio - all of which are essential for gaining admission to top architecture schools in the UK. It’s especially recommended for students who have not completed A Levels or the International Baccalaureate, or those who need time to explore their design interests more deeply before committing to a full degree.
After the Foundation Year, students typically move on to a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, which lasts three years. This undergraduate programme (known as RIBA Part 1) lays the foundation for architectural training, covering key areas such as design principles, architectural history, construction methods, sustainability, and digital tools. Following graduation, students are required to complete one year of professional experience, often referred to as the “Year Out.” During this period, you’ll work in an architectural practice, applying what you’ve learned in real-world settings and beginning to shape your professional identity.
